2020 Mercedes GLE Review – Model change in the best-selling Mercedes-SUV: 2015 from the M-Class to GLE renamed luxury off-roader with star starts again with some innovations in the fourth generation. And above all, they have the goal of further improving driving and operating comfort.
Mercedes-Benz claims to have set a trend in 1997 with the introduction of the M-Class. The trend to the luxury SUV. In fact, the star-shaped Hochbeiner, which was then launched as the first model in the new US plant in Tuscaloosa / Alabama, was the pioneer of a growth segment that many imitators from the Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg to the Volvo XC90 followed. Over 20 years and around two million copies sold later – the M-Class became the GLE in 2015 – the fourth generation of the off-roader is intended to underpin its reputation as a trendsetter. And so the customer expects from the end of January, when the delivery of the noble Hochbeiners starts with an entry-level rate of 65,807 euros, again some innovations that can be found in any other current SUV on the market, whether large or small.
2020 Mercedes GLE Redesign Exterior & Interior
The outfit looks, somewhat ridged from some crimps and edges. The front end carries the new brand face. The taillights and a double-sided illuminated graphics are also new, but the overall picture remains alone because of the distinctive, wide C-pillar: unmistakably a Mercedes GLE.
The interior, however, presents itself completely new. The multimedia system MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User eXperience), which is well-known from the A-Class, is entering the 2020 Mercedes GLE and requires a new one with its two high-resolution 12.3-inch displays, which are connected to a continuous screen in broadband optics cockpit layout. This somehow seems familiar and should open up to Mercedes customers intuitively. The stylish, apparently floating instrument panel contrasts with a massive center console, whose robustness is underlined by two dominant handles.
Space has noticeably improved, especially for the passengers in the second row. Because the increase in the length of the body by 10.5 centimeters to 4.92 meters and the increased by eight centimeters wheelbase (3.00 meters) are mainly benefiting the back seat. They can now look forward to one meter of legroom, and even tall grown contemporaries will not fall on their heads. As a special feature, a six-fold fully electrically adjustable second row of seats with a longitudinal adjustment can be ordered by up to 10 centimeters. And in addition to sufficient USB ports, there is even a 230-volt power outlet for laptops or similar equipment optional.
The luggage volume behind the backrests has shrunk to 630 liters – without adjustable rear seats. With this option, the extended cargo holds ever 825 liters, and with folded backrests, which also works fully electric from the trunk, it is one way or stately 2055 liters. Alternatively, two additional optional seats in the third row can be converted into a seven-seater. The trailer load is 2,700 kilograms but can be increased with air suspension to 3.5 tons as before.
2020 Mercedes GLE Engine Specs & Performance
So, now behind the wheelset and go on a discovery tour. This begins with a completely new range of engines with eight- and six-cylinder petrol and four- and six-cylinder diesels, of which the market launch, but initially only two variants are offered: the diesel engine GLE 300d 4Matic with 180 kW / 245 hp, the for 65,807 euros currently represents the entry-level model, and as a provisional only variant with gasoline engine of the inline six-cylinder 2020 Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic with 270 kW / 367 hp at prices from 72,650 euros.
Both engines impress with excellent smoothness and low noise, with the four-cylinder diesel is not so far away from the silky smooth gasoline six-pack, as one might expect. The 2.0-liter engine sprints in 7.2 seconds to 100, creates a maximum of 225 km / h and has 500 Nm at 1600 tours sufficient draft, so it lacks for a brisk progress on nothing. Of course, the engine meeting the Euro 6d temp standard shines especially in terms of fuel consumption. The hardly achievable standard value (according to NEDC) of 6.1 l / 100 km of diesel was in the first test rounds around San Antonio / Texas after all a value well below eight liters compared.
Technically more interesting is undoubtedly the 2020 Mercedes GLE 450 4Matic, whose six-cylinder engine is electrified with a 48-volt electrical system. The Mercedes off-roader is thus becoming a “mild hybrid” in which an integrated starter-generator takes on hybrid functions such as boosting or recuperation. In the first case, this means that the 270 kW / 367 hp and 500 Nm torque already neatly stocked power-six pack can retrieve additional 16 kW / 22 hp and another 250 Nm of torque, in the other case, this reduces consumption. The standard values are between 8.3 and 9.4 liters Super, our onboard computer showed a value of just over 10 liters.
On the 48-board technology, one of the two world premieres in the GLE builds on: the electro-hydraulic suspension E-Active Body Control (E-ABC), which costs 7,735 euros extra and must be combined with the also optional air suspension (Airmatic). It is the only system on the market that can individually control the spring and damper forces on each individual wheel by means of an electric hydraulic pump. In conjunction with a surface scanner (Road Surface Scan) and the curve tilting function “Curve”, the already high level of ride comfort is thus improved a further ounce. Side roll in curves is barely perceptible, and pitching and lifting movements trying to iron out the suspension with the help of the scanner largely. This works better on long bumps than on short bumps.
But the E-ABC not only provides improved on-road comfort, but also excellent terrain qualities. Especially spectacular – in conjunction with the off-road package Plus – the so-called free-ride mode, with which the 2020 Mercedes GLE can free itself from the most difficult situations. Anyone who is deep in the sand, for example, with all four wheels, is gradually taken back to freedom by a “bouncing” suspension.
New MBUX Multimedia System
The MBUX multimedia system will be expanded to include the “Interior Assist” in the 2020 Mercedes GLE. A camera in the overhead control unit serves as a proximity sensor that detects the intent of the driver or passenger, changes displays on the media display, highlights menu items on the touchscreen, or automatically turns on the reading light when the driver grabs an item on the right of the unoccupied passenger seat, The assistant is offered but only in the MBUX package for 1,722 euros extra.
Thanks to real-time traffic information, the traffic jam assistant detects where the traffic is already in front of the driver and, as a precautionary measure, reduces the speed in order to be prepared for a slowdown. And the active steering assistant knows where the vehicle is on multi-lane highways and is based on the lane rescue at the existing lane markings. The Trailer Allocation Assistant makes it easier for inexperienced team drivers to reverse the maneuver.
One may justifiably argue about the sense and nonsense of an “energizing coach”, which recommends personal well-being programs tailored to the driver as well as special settings of the massage seats. The even higher-resolution head-up display, which fades in a 45×15 centimeters enlarged, the full-color image in the windscreen, is a real win.
